We had thought about it all Spring. It would be so nice to have a “sabbatical” in the mountains for a few weeks during the heat of the summer. So we started searching for the perfect camper that we could pull behind our Toyota Tacoma.
Tacomas aren’t really meant for hauling, so we had to keep our weight capacity to a minimum. That meant a 15- to 19-foot trailer without too many additions would have to do. We really wanted multiple sitting areas that turned into beds (for current kids and future kids), and we wanted a full bathroom.
The pandemic had not been kind to buyers of resale items. From cars to weight sets to toys, everything seems to not only be going up in price, but is also in short supply. The same is true for pull-behind trailers. A flurrying market meant people were paying thousands of dollars more than a year or two ago.
After several trips out of town to see prospects and full on negotiations with people across the country, we found the ideal floor plan, age, and condition of a Kit Companion model in Cleburne, TX. We drove to Cleburne, and when we arrived, there was already a couple inspecting it. Another buyer was scheduled to arrive in an hour, so we brought our cash with us.
The trailer was a great purchase, but the whole ordeal had some stories – including the fact that we left the key that opened all of the compartments on the trailer tongue as we were pulling away from purchasing it. It was long gone by the time we got home. The title was still in the old (likely deceased) owner’s name, and the original tow lights no longer work – despite what the most recent owner told us about them.
Update: We went on our camper trip in mid-August to Northern New Mexico and Colorado. Check out all the photos from that trip!
